Environment

2023 – Present: FOTJ leads efforts to remove shipwrecks from the beach before they breakup in the surf and create unsanitary marine debris on the beach and in the ocean. We have had meetings and correspondence with County (Supervisor, Sheriff Harbor Patrol, Beaches and Harbor) and US Coast Guard. To protect the marine mammals and beach goers, we have requested that the Sheriff increase their funding to $275k which should provide adequate funding to remove shipwrecks.

2016 – Present: FOTJ organizes and hosts the Jungle Clean Up which coincides with Annual National Coastal Clean Up Day. Our event is dedicated to removing trash from the neighborhood and beach. For this event, we partner with City (Transportation, Sanitation, Street Services), County (Supervisor, Public Works, Beaches and Harbor), Neighborhood Council of Westchester/Playa and Loyola Marymount University.

CAMPAIGNS

2016 – 2022: FOTJ led efforts to find a solution to prevent the trash from flowing down Ballona Creek and polluting the ocean. Ballona Creek services 130 sq miles of storm drains. Our efforts facilitated County’s installation of the Interceptor which has currently removed 180 tons of trash. We had many meetings and correspondence with the County (Supervisor, Public Works), State (Coastal Commission, Regional Water Quality Board, Fish & Wildlife), US Army Corps of Engineers, environmental groups, community and media. FOTJ garnered over 2500 petition supporters.

2021 – 2022: FOTJ represented residents and businesses to ensure the City enforced no vehicle dwellings along Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. This would ensure the Wetlands is not degraded due to sanitation issues and preserving the habitat for the native animals and plants. This also would ensure a safer environment for people to visit Ballona Wetlands. We had many meetings with City (Transportation, Sanitation, Engineering, Administrative Office), County Supervisor and State. FOTJ garnered over 9000 petition supporters.
